Somatic Education is the use of sensory-motor learning to gain greater control of one’s physiological process. It is “somatic” in the sense that the learning occurs within the individual as an internalized process. Thomas Hanna, Ph.D.
The movements used in Somatic movement classes are designed not to instruct to the proper posture or movement, but to awaken. There is no one way of moving or standing that is the right way or the best way to be aimed for at all times. Moving or standing is right not when it functions all the time in one particular ideal manner, but when it works in a way that lets moving or standing freely adjust, changing it’s quality according to our needs of the moment so that we are adequately supported as the environment changes.
